Sacramento authorities are looking into a shooting that broke out on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area just as law enforcement were dissolving an unlawful assembly of hundreds of attendees.
Prior to the Shooting
Sacramento County law enforcement initially got calls about Howe Community Park at approximately 6:30 Saturday evening after obtaining information of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Shortly after, a follow-up call was made mentioning a reported physical confrontation taking place inside the park.
A sheriff's airship searched from above but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Even so, it was apparent that a crowd of several hundred had gathered without authorization without permission.
When the Shots Rang Out
Officers worked to disperse the crowd by encircling the gathering and using their vehicle PA systems ordering the assembled crowd to leave immediately. Approximately 15 minutes were spent for attendees to disperse.
Just as the crowd began to move that upwards of 20 gunshots echoed through the night. The shots triggered a stampede. Law enforcement at once began searching for victims.
Four People Shot
Altogether, four gunshot victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The victims — a group of one female and three male victims all believed to be in their early to late twenties — were transported to area medical facilities. Medical personnel reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one suffered minor injuries. In a positive development, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento fire crews provided support and helped triage those with gunshot wounds on location.
What Investigators Found
The primary shooting scene was believed to have taken place along the Cottage Way side of the park adjacent to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives recovered further ballistic evidence in the form of shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Projectile impacts were observed in the iron perimeter fence adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. Suspect Information
Reports confirmed through scanner monitoring showed that a Kia connected to the shooting was pulled over in the Solano County area. Four detainees were detained. Law enforcement units were en route to collect those detained to bring the suspects back for processing in Sacramento County. Footage analyzed by investigators established that there were two gunmen.
